    Bring your nursery, school or college to one of Essex Wildlife Trust’s outstanding education facilities or we can bring our expertise to you.

    Exploring the great outdoors is incredibly worthwhile for all ages. Students will gain knowledge and develop practical skills through programmes linked to the curriculum or make use of numerous enrichment opportunities at our education centres or at your site. We cater for all ages and abilities. We also offer: Forest School, schools outreach, INSET training ,“rocks and soils” and “bushcraft”.

    Site History

    The reserve is on the site of three major chalk quarries - Warren Gorge, Lion Gorge, and Grays Gorge which were worked from the end of the 18th century for around 150 years.

    • Birds: kingfishers, woodpeckers, sand martins, reed and Cetti's warblers and house martins. Siskin, redpoll and pochard visit in winter. Mute swans, Graylag geese and Canadian geese.
    • Fish: include tench, rudd, pike and bream.
    Plants and Trees

    Orchids: common spotted, bee, and bird's-nest.

    Trees: beech, oak, ash and sycamore
